Recently, some skeptical students in a media studies class put Kilbourne to the test. After watching the film, they ripped out a ton of ads depicting women and hung them on the wall. Then we went through the notes from the movie and tried applying them to our own data to see if she was just picking ad’s that made her point, or if her claims about what’s out there were founded.
After carrying out their own research, students were convinced that there was validity to Kilbourne’s claims. It was important to do this activity before having students address questions about the serious consequences of this kind of advertizing.
